Sound Country: A Green Music Guide

Sustainability Resource for the Music Industry

Green Music Australia, in partnership with the NSW and Victorian Governments, needed a comprehensive sustainability resource for the Australian music industry, something that could reach touring musicians, venue managers, and industry professionals and actually change how they work. The challenge was translating over 120 pages of dense, practical information into something people would want to pick up, read, and share. Government-backed sustainability guides have a reputation for being dry and inaccessible. This one couldn't afford to be.

The Approach

The creative direction was rooted in the culture it was speaking to. Rather than a corporate or institutional aesthetic, I leaned into the DIY, grassroots spirit of the music industry, using hand-drawn typography and a visual language that felt human, tactile, and alive. The guide needed to feel like it came from within the music community, not handed down to it.
The project began with the 120+ page document before expanding into an interactive website, built around a clickable map illustrated by Steph Hughes, allowing users to navigate the resource intuitively. From there, the design system extended across print, posters, social media assets, and promotional materials for Bigsound, one of Australia's most prominent music industry conferences. Each format required its own considered approach while maintaining a consistent, cohesive identity throughout.

The Outcome

The guide was embraced widely across the Australian music industry, earning endorsements from Missy Higgins, Regurgitator, and David Bridie, and circulating across blogs and industry publications online. Missy Higgins called it "so great to have... specific resources with which we can try to tread more lightly on the planet." Regurgitator described it as "the perfect starting point to approach touring and music industry practice with greater awareness." That kind of response, from artists who've been thinking about these issues for over a decade, speaks to a resource that landed exactly as intended.
